A stroke is an all too common issue suffered throughout America. The misconception is that only those who have lived extreme lifestyles and the elderly are susceptible to strokes. The alarming fact is that approximately a quarter of the population over the age of 25 will experience a stroke.

Of the two types of strokes, ischemic often stem from blood clots and hemorrhagic strokes which come from brain bleeding. Although strokes seem like a mild medical issue that many people will experience sometime in their life, both types of strokes can result in emergency surgery.

So who is at risk of a stroke? Internationally, China had the highest risk with approximately 39 percent of the population expected to suffer a stroke in their lifetime. But within the United States somewhere between 23 percent and 29 percent of people over 25 should expect to have a stroke in their life. Gender doesn't make a difference, but the common factor that researchers and doctors agree on is that lifestyle is the leading aspect of stroke and other heart diseases.

Lifestyle Plays A More Significant Role Than You Might Think

Obesity, lack of physical activity, and smoking are all known lifestyle choices that link directly to stroke risk. Doctors and public health agencies are working diligently to increase public awareness of this connection and to decrease the percentage of the population likely to suffer a stroke.

Because stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability, it has become a top priority within the medical community. Most strokes are preventable through lifestyle and diet changes.

Make The Necessary Changes Now

Many programs work with young adults to establish good health and eating habits. Although a stroke is more likely to occur after middle age, the steps necessary for prevention must start as early in life as possible.

Currently, about one in four people will experience a stroke in their lifetime. The only sure way to avoid stroke is through lifestyle change.
