Apples + Tea

Researchers in Denmark found that people who regularly ate high amounts of flavonoids were less susceptible to death from heart disease or cancer. Flavonoids are the chemical compounds in plant-based food and drink. For those at high risk such as cigarette smokers and those who drink more than two alcoholic drinks daily, studies have shown that flavonoid-rich foods seemed to lower the risk of death from cancer or heart disease. Of course, the most effective way to improve your health is to quit smoking and lower the amount of alcohol you consume. Changing your diet and exercising on a regular basis are the most important factors in improving your overall health. Unsplash / Chander R Increasing your flavonoid consumption will not lead to immediate health benefits, but it may contribute to your blood vessels functioning more effectively, which can decrease your chances of dying from heart disease of cancer. Flavonoids can be found in a variety of food and drink, mostly from fruits and vegetables, such as a hot cup of tea or a fresh apple. Participants in studies were found to have the lowest risk of cancer or health disease. The studies are ongoing, though, as researchers attempt to learn more about the association between flavonoids and decreased health risks. One thing that researchers and scientists agree on, however, is that changing your lifestyle plays the biggest part in lowering your risk of cancer and heart disease. While flavonoids may be an anti-inflammatory that counters the effects of tobacco and alcohol on the body, simply quitting smoking and/or drinking will still have the largest influence on your health. Improving your health starts with choosing to be more active and watching what goes into your body.
