Naturally Get Rid of Gray Hair?
Do you know about the 50-50-50 rule? While speaking to Good Housekeeping, Dr. Anthony Oro, professor of dermatology at Stanford University, said that 50% of the population has about 50% gray hair at age 50.
Although graying comes naturally with age, we are seeing more youngsters developing gray hair, and stress is one of the culprits. So, youngsters and older people are looking for ways to get rid of gray hair naturally.
Stress is associated with a lot of hair and skin issues, and according to Dr. Roopal Kundu, associate professor in dermatology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, stress isn’t a direct cause of hair graying.
However, researchers at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, have discovered that reducing stress can reverse gray hair. This research is proof of concept that if the stress is eliminated, stress-induced hair graying can be reversed, despite the longtime belief that graying is irreversible.
Before being visually seen on the head, your hair is usually under the skin as follicles. It’s at this moment, that the hair is exposed to everything that happens in your body and mind, including stress hormones.
If you’re under a lot of stress, more stress hormones will be released, leading to stress-induced hair graying, which is visible once your hair comes out of the follicles.
Martin Picard, the senior author of this research, asserts that we shall get new insight on the malleability of human aging when we understand the mechanisms that allow gray hairs to return to their pigmented, younger state.
But there’s a catch!
Your 80-year old grandma isn’t likely to naturally reverse graying when stress is reduced, and neither will your 12-year old son get more grey hair if you significantly stressed him.
The study simply means that hair graying may be slowed down if you maintain a stress-free life. So, instead of being gray at 50, it might happen at 60, or so.
