The KEY to Preventing Dementia?

According to a 2020 report by the Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, over 40 percent of the world's dementia cases have a handful of risk influences. After reviewing existing research, the statement suggested ways to prevent or delay the case. We know dementia is yet to receive an official cure throughout different investigations, but several preventions have proven to work for most individuals.

Avoid Smoking

There's no one universal method known to prevent dementia. However, suppose you are a heavy smoker; it's high time you quit or regulate your smoking habits because regular smokers are at a higher risk of developing dementia than non-smokers or light smokers. Smoking is ranked third among the nine modifiable risk factors associated with dementia, e.g., diet, social isolation, and depression. Although there's no direct correlation between the two, experts have found that inhaling tobacco increases oxidative stress. This is an imbalance between antioxidants needed to remove toxin cells in our bodies and the toxic molecules. In most cases, the imbalance causes damage to the cells in our bodies. Experts have linked the imbalance of the two to the onset of dementia.

Watch Your Diet and Start Eating Healthy

An unhealthy diet can cause not only dementia but also other illnesses. Foods such as leafy greens, blueberries, and curcumin (found in the spice turmeric) help in cognitive benefits, allowing the brain to get more protected against cell damage. Furthermore, one study found that eating foods with too much salt increased protein tau levels, causing cognitive impairment. Although scientists are still not fully aware of the foods causing dementia, another study has found that eating foods such as fish and vegetables (Spinach and Kale) contributed to a slower age-related intellectual decline. We might attribute this to the neuroprotective effects of various nutrients found in the foods.
