For years, canola oil has been hyped as a positive alternative to some of the less desirable culinary oils that are used in your kitchen. However, recent research may change all of that. Findings have shown that it isn’t as healthy as some may think and that it may be especially bad for your brain.

Here’s Why Canola Oil May Be Bad For You

As it turns out, canola oil contains many of the unhealthiest elements that fat can have. It has both trans fatty acids, Omega-6 fatty acids. Studies have shown that an overload of Omega – 6 fatty acids can cause inflammation that’s so problematic it can affect your brain, causing a host of problems including anxiety, brain fog, and Alzheimer’s.

In addition, the polyunsaturated fats found in canola oil are unstable and degrade under heat. At that point, they release free radicals that affect how your body ages and can also affect your brain. Canola oil also lacks the heathy fats your brain thrives on and, to make matters worse, is often used as a substitute for oils that do have those healthier fats.

It Is Unappetizing For Other Reasons

Canola oil is unhealthy for a few other reasons too. It’s worth knowing that the oil is actually generated from the rapeseed plant, a plant that is from the same family as mustard, broccoli and cabbage plants. Oil from this plant were considered inedible because it contained compounds that depressed growth in animals and were linked to heart disease. In the 1970’s they revised the process just enough to make it palatable to humans.

In addition, the oil is made through an unnatural process that includes a range of caustic chemicals including lye, bleach, and deodorants. This process includes a wash in hexane which is a neurotoxin that can also be found in gasoline.

Consider Other Options For Healthy Oils

With this much risk to your brain, it may be wise to consider other options for healthier fats. Well-made olive oil or coconut oil are two choices, but there are others. Once you do research, you’re likely to find a choice that’s as good for your brain as it is for your heart and your tastebuds.
