- Benadryl. Nyquil, Unisom, and Sominex are over-the-counter medications that are commonly used as antihistamines. Tylenol PM and other "PM" versions, used as sleep aids, can also contribute to the risk of falling.
- Sleep Aids. Prescription sedatives can cause a person to become dizzy or disoriented, increasing the likelihood of a fall. Sonata, Ambien, and Lunesta are of the most commonly prescribed sleep aids that can be linked to falls.
- Benzodiazepines. Anxiety and sleep aid drugs like Valium, Xanax, and Ativan are widely prescribed but can cause drowsiness and increase the risk that one could take a tumble while on one of these medications.
- Opioids. These are medications commonly prescribed for pain management. Vicodin, Percocet, and Percodan are the most common of those prescribed. Because they can suppress the central nervous system, they have been associated with falls.
- Antidepressants. This type of medication is also widely prescribed to deal with not only depression but anxiety as well, to treat those mental health conditions. Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa, and Prozac are of the most common that are prescribed for these conditions. However, all antidepressants can run those taking them the risk of falling.
